A minor tune-up in the past involved inspections of hoses, belts, wires, check for vacuum leaks, coolant leaks, oil leaks. It might also include ignition timing adjustment and/or spark plugs replacement. We still perform most of the minor tune up tasks today – computers cannot check belts or hoses, or determine where an oil leak is coming from.
A major tune-up, in addition to the items listed under the minor tune-up, often involved fuel pump replacement, sensor replacement, and transmission fluid replacement as well.
Modern vehicles do a lot of adjustments in real time. On-board computers read inputs from sensors, and based on that information adjust many parameters, for example how much air goes into fuel-air mixture, and based on that in turn, calculate emissions. If their calculations point to a potential problem, they will try to make adjustments, but if they cannot, the check engine light gets illuminated.
Fortunately for the driver, the check engine light often gives a warning in the early stages of the problem, so that mechanics at a repair shop can correct the problem before it results in damage or repairs. Yet even with all the computers monitoring all the sensors in your car, modern tune up still requires highly skilled mechanics spotting leaks, replacing spark plugs or the water pump, checking belts and hoses. Ultimately, it still takes an experienced human to find and fix the root cause a problem that an on-board computer identified.
