Auto Headlight Restoration in Stockton, CA
Until the 1990s, auto headlights were made out of glass. The glass stayed clear throughout the lifespan of the vehicle. But during the 1990s auto manufacturers decided to make headlights out of polycarbonate plastic. They reasoned that plastic is less likely to crack, and it can be easily formed into various shapes. Unfortunately, the introduction of headlights made out of polycarbonate plastic also introduced us to “foggy headlights”.
Pollution, grit, exposure to the UV rays from the sun cause plastic headlights to develop a “foggy” appearance. As the outer plastic layer of the headlights deteriorates due to these environmental factors, it starts to absorb blue light from the light bulbs, and scatter light in general, resulting in yellowish, less potent light, and less light falling on the road.
The good news is that we can often restore plastic headlights to their former capacity. We clean and grind off the outer plastic layer, using specially formulated chemicals in the process, to restore the headlights to almost pristine condition.
